THE RED SOX TOOK 86 YEARS TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP.  HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR YOU TO LAND A JOB ?

by George Zeller

Are there parallels to the Red Sox’s accomplishment and your job search?  Examining some key factors in the Sox’s success, I believe associations can be made:

Believe in yourself

The Red Sox knew that they were good, that they were special and that they could win it all.  Similarly, a job seeker has to believe in the same way in order to convince an employer to hire him/her.

Relax

The Sox had a lot of fun playing and never seemed overly stressed.  Generally speaking, individuals perform better when they are relaxed.  They are more energetic, creative and productive.  They are also more fun to be with and, therefore, attract people.  Job hunting can be very stressful.  The more you can relieve that stress, the more successful your search will be.

Teamwork

Everyone on the Red Sox will tell you it was a total team effort that made them successful.  Job hunting is not a loner sport.  Involve as many people as you can in your search.  Do not be reticent about asking for help.  Also, do not be reluctant to help others.  In fact, “over-reciprocate” whenever possible.

Take chances

The Sox traded Nomar, their most popular player in the middle of the year.  Obviously, the trade paid off handsomely.  At times, it may be advantageous to take risks during your job search.  Dare to be unique and stand out from the competition.  Follow your instincts; they are usually correct.

Bounce back from adversity

Losing to the Yankees last year in the deciding seventh game and being down 3-0 this year, the Sox rebounded and went on to win the World Series. Similarly, your job search can test your character and fortitude.  There will be times when you will feel totally defeated.  Turn those times into learning experiences.  You will become a more valuable employee as a result.

May your job search be shorter than 86 years.
